A Â lake is an area filled with water and it is filled with water.

Lakes are not a part of ocean (except for sea lochs in ireland and scotland).

Lakes are also larger than ponds. Most lakes are fed and drained by streams.

Lakes are of two types-Â

1.Natural lakes

2.Artificial lakes

Lakes promote agriculture.

During the dry season and summer season lakes provide water for domestic purposes.

Lakes are also used for hydroelectric power.

1.Kolleru lakes –Â

2.Sambhar lake –Â

It is located on Rajasthan.

It is located 96 km south west of the Jaipur and 64 km north east of Ajmer.

It can be spread over nearly 200-sq-kms.


4.Pulicat lake –Â

It is a second largest brackish- water lake.

The large spindle shaped barrier island named Sriharikota separates the lake from the Bay of Bengal and this island is the home of satish dhawan space centre, the launched site of India’s successful first lunar space mission- The Chandrayaan- 1

Asia’s largest Tupil garden is on the banks of Dal lake.

Mughal gardens, Shalimar Bagh are on the banks of Dal lake.


11.Tsomgo lake-Â

Tsomgo is a glacial lake in the East Sikkim.

The lake is the venue for the guru Purnima festival in which Jhakris of Sikkim assemble at the lake area to derive benefits from the healing qualities of the lake waters.


12.Nalsarover lake –Â

It is the largest water bird sanctuary in the India.

It was declared a bird sanctuary in April 1969.

24. Pichola lake –Â

It is situated in Udaipur, Rajasthan.Â

It is an artificial fresh water lake, created in the year 1362 AD.


25. Pangong lake –Â

It is located in Ladakh city, Jammu and Kashmir.

Its length is 134 km and width is 5 km approximately.
